Mandatory Desexing
Thousands of companion animals in Victoria are euthanised each year because animal welfare groups are not able to find suitable homes for them.
The over-population of companion animals in Victoria, particularly amongst cats, has long since reached crisis point. The indiscriminate breeding within feral and domestic animal populations continues to fuel the problem. For example, of the 53,000 cats and kittens that enter shelters across Victoria each year, approximately 35,000 are euthanised. This number is totally unacceptable.
The compulsory desexing of all companion animals at an early age (unless it is a registered breeding animal) will relieve the strain placed upon animal shelters and most importantly, will help provide better welfare outcomes for these animals.
How you can help
- Ask your prospective representatives how they would address these animal welfare issues. Find your local MP or candidate here.
- Ensure all of your companion animals are desexed.
- If you are feeding an unowned or stray/feral cat, take ownership of the cat and have it desexed. Alternatively, take the cat to an animal welfare centre.
- Write to your local council requesting compulsory desexing be made mandatory in your local government area.
- Encourage others to have their animals desexed.
What we want
- All local councils in Victoria should introduce mandatory desexing.
- All owners of companion animals should desex their pets to curb the unacceptably high euthanasia rates in Victoria.
