Hunting
A proposal is still before the New South Wales parliament that would open up private game reserves in the state and allow recreational hunting in some national parks.
The plan put forward by the NSW Shooters Party would also add new animals to the legal shooting list, including native species like cockatoos, black swans and galahs. If passed, the Bill would also revive duck hunting in New South Wales.
This Bill is a blatant attempt to disguise recreational hunting as feral animal control.
It contains no measures to protect the welfare of animals shot by recreational hunters and flies in the face of the progress made in recent years to improve humaneness in wildlife and pest animal management.
Far from improving pest animal control, this Bill would actually encourage the introduction of new pest animals into New South Wales, animals that aren't even a problem in this state, just in order to hunt them down and shoot them.

NSW Game Council
An initiative of the NSW Shooters Party, the NSW Game Council was established in 2002 under the Game and Feral Animal Control Act 2002. The Game Council is a statutory authority that administers the NSW Game Hunting Licensing System and represents the interests of licenced game hunters. The Game Council is also tasked with providing advice to the NSW Government on game and feral animal control. It was originally intended to be a self-funded body but eight years after its creation, the Game Council continues to receive significant government funding.
The RSPCA is a leading authority on humane pest animal management and firmly believes that there is no such thing as 'conservation hunting', as the Game Council claims. Recreational hunting is not strategic, not always humane nor justified. The RSPCA is opposed to hunting animals for sport because of the huge potential for cruelty. The Game Council is a ruse and in no way contributes to effective pest animal management in New South Wales.
We would like to see both the Shooters Party Bill and the Game Council itself abolished and its millions of dollars of taxpayer funding redirected into the strategic, effective and humane management of animals deemed as pests in New South Wales and managed by the relevant government department.
