Desexing

Thousands of cats and dogs across New South Wales are euthanised every year because there simply are more animals than suitable homes for them to go to.

Desexing

Did you know that in six short years one female dog and its offspring can produce thousands of puppies? In the same period, a female cat and her offspring can produce well over 100,000 kittens. Many of these puppies and kittens that don't find homes end up in pounds or shelters or are dumped.

These strays become easy targets for animal cruelty. Unwanted puppies and kittens can suffer an awful life of starvation, disease, lack of shelter and love, and many contribute to the punishing cycle of over-breeding. Last year RSPCA NSW was forced to euthanase 21,763 cats and dogs - a heartbreaking and totally unacceptable outcome.

The RSPCA desexes all adoptable animals but this is not always the case with pet shops and private sales. Mandatory desexing at point of sale would help address the overpopulation problem. The RSPCA would like to see state laws implemented that make it illegal to sell an undesexed companion animal, unless they are a registered breeding animal.

We also encourage all owners of companion animals to desex their pets.

How you can help

Become a Political Animal

  • Ask your newly elected political representatives how they would address these animal welfare issues.
    Write to your local MP
  • Ensure all of your companion animals are desexed.
  • If you are feeding an unowned or stray/feral cat, take ownership of the cat and have it desexed. Alternatively, take the cat to an animal welfare centre.
