Writing to your MP is a great way to ensure our government’s attention is focused on animal welfare. MPs are responsible for representing their constituents concerns in parliament and writing a personal letter is a great way to reach them on a one-on-one level. You may want to simply raise your concerns with them, but you might also like to request an appointment to discuss these issues in person. Either way, if the local community are not applying pressure to MPs to do something about animal welfare, there is a very good chance it will not be raised on their agenda.
‘Form’ letters that you often find on campaign websites are generally considered as spam to MPs and they are not something they pay much attention to. In our conversations with MPs they have indicated that a personal letter can carry great weight and is a more honest representation of what their constituents are feeling on various issues.
We appreciate you considering taking the time to write to your MP and help us raise the profile of our campaigns. In order to help you, we have included some pointers below to help get you started. Put these points in your own words and make sure you request a reply. If you have put the effort into writing a letter, it is only fair your MP to do the same!
